WHAT'S HAPPENING / DIRECTOR'S REPORTS

Douglas was Chair for the day.

Diana Richards was a guest from Sydney Rotary Club. Col Myers sent an apology as he is travelling.

Howard and Marc advised us that Alan Gerrard is currently with his sons in Brisbane who are helping him with a pain management regime. His cancer diagnosis is advanced. He should be back on the GC after Easter.

Howard reminded members that earlier in the year we had agreed to provide $1000/- for the Rotary Centenary Project whose aim is to immunise children in the Pacific. He indicated to members that the club is financially healthy and recommended we increase this donation to $2000/- and members agreed by a show of hands.

There were only 3 reports from Directors.

Kevin said he has made contact 12 schools in the region at the right levels wearing his other hat of the Southport RSL. He believes he can leverage off this for our own Youth Services programmes and will keep us posted.

Dennis said he has had to take over reporting to the Rotary Foundation for the SERES project as the responses he has been getting from Rotary in Guatemala have been sub optimal. He is being assisted by a former DG who coincidentally has expertise in water management and irrigation which will be very helpful.

Jenny advised us that the Chapel has had 5 bookings this month and Howard confirmed the Chapel is very much back to profitability following the COVID slump.

Letitia reminded people to RSVP for the trip to Canungra on 10th April. Only 10 people have responded and paid so far.

Douglas reminded people of the Rotary Foundation money boxes. A number of members either couldn't recall or didn't attend the meeting when this was raised. The concept is for members to fill them with loose change and then donate them to the foundation. Letitia is going to see if she can locate some more money boxes.

EVENTS:

I am doing this in ClubRunner. The only way I have found I can include an event with applications etc is to create an event in ClubRunner and then ClubRunner will create a link to that event. It won't directly publish the material. I can't import the material as either a Word or PDF file. I might be able to take a JPEG photo of it and then import it. Too hard. I will list the events and we will send separate invites to members.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Today we didn't have a guest speaker. Howard, current President, and Rod, President Elect gave us a couple of presentations.

Howard along with a team of Dianne, George and Dave have been working on a Club Value Proposition so that people can clearly understand what our club stands for, particularly new members.

The team first looked at Rotary International's Values:

  • Promoting Peace
  • Fighting Disease
  • Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies
  • Protecting the environment
They then compared this to what we have spent our money on over the last 5 years which totalled some $240k. Despite some conjecture over the numbers it is pretty clear where the club has focussed its efforts over the last 5 years.
  • 64% has been spent on youth whether children's hospitals, youth programmes, nippers, disadvantaged programmes and schools.
  • 11% on returned service men, women and their families
  • 5% to Surf Lifesaving (ex Nippers)
  • 20% to overseas aid, disaster funding and community organisations.
Having regard to these facts the team has made a suggestion that our club adopt the following as our club's value proposition.

  • Help sick children and fight disease.
  • Support education for disabled and disadvantaged children.
  • Promote youth development.
  • Remember service to our Nation and provide support to veterans.
  • Respond to disaster and humanitarian crises.
  • Combat homelessness.
These were passed by a majority present with a show of hands. As an aside there are other causes which are not precluded which can be considered as secondary values and these are domestic violence, child exploitation, bullying, the environment and suicide prevention.

Well done to the team.

Rod has recently attended President Elect Training (PET). He said it was a good networking event with peers. His major takeaway is the club is in very good shape with the strategy and value proposition this year. Comparatively we are financially sound due to efforts of current and past members. He said he is taking over a ship which is in very good shape and can focus on strategy implementation in line with our value proposition.
