WHAT’S HAPPENING / DIRECTOR’S REPORTS

Letitia introduced Janette Salmi from Dignified Services as our guest speaker for the day. George introduced Carl Heath, a guest Rotarian, as his guest.

Howard advised members as a follow up to the previous meeting that a draft 3 year plan for the club has now been circulated to members after a preliminary review by the Board of Directors. He encouraged members to review it and provide comments and feedback to him which will be incorporated into an agenda for the special meeting to be held on 5 February which will be held to review the plan along with member input.

Laurie advised that he has been in discussions with Angie Bell the Federal Member for Moncrief who has advised that there are Federal Grants available for Community Projects in the range of $2500 – 20,000/- and encouraged members to contact him with any ideas so that we can explore the project/s in the context of eligibility criteria. Editor’s note: I think we should spend some more time exploring this at the next meeting.

Dennis advised that the new lights are in and working at the Rotary Kokoda Memorial wall and encouraged members to drop by in the evening. A more formal visit will be arranged in the future with a proposed dinner at a Thai restaurant in Broadbeach preceding it. He also mentioned that his father’s paver has arrived. This was of interest to some members as pavers are available for any veteran’s of the conflict in Nuigini in addition to the Kokoda conflict itself. He also advised members that most of the AV kit has arrived and we are just waiting on a couple more small components. Again we had issues with the SYC audio system so let’s hope the new gear solves this and saves Letitia some stress in the weekly set up!!

George moved a VOT to Dennis for his initiative in promoting the lighting project and then following through with the fundraising and installation. Job well done and appreciated by members. This will be the 3rd iteration of lighting at the wall and certainly the most professional.

Jenny will be attending the Gold Coast Bridal expo on 7th February to promote the chapel as a venue. She will be assisted by Maggie. Organisers are suggesting there is a pent up demand from weddings postponed in 2020 based on the success of their recent Brisbane event.

Marc advised that he has been liasing with the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation and with existing funds the intention is to purchase 3 items of equipment for the children’s ward totaling $20-21k.

Dave reported that bare Your Soles for Kids is in full swing as an event scheduled for 23rd May. Dave will be sending out the historical sponsor list and members will be asked to help solicit sponsors. Howard’s son, Justin, and Elaine Kennett have also volunteered to help out with the sponsorship drive. Editors note: The Duff / Rudd team are polishing their soles, working on a costume (shamed last year by other participants), Caitlin is coming up from Melbourne and using last year as a guide our bowling will be rubbish!!
EVENTS:

Our social event on 5 February will be substituted by the Strategy Planning meeting to finalise and approve the club’s 3 year strategic plan.

George is busing planning a member visit to the Land Warfare Centre Kokoda Barracks where we will inspect centre, the newly completed Kokoda Walk and the Museum – Museum is great. Date to be fixed.

Dinner and visit to the Rotary Kokoda Wall to see the new lighting. Date to be fixed.

Bare your Soles for Kids. 23rd May. See you there.

Rotary Kokoda Classic. 18th September subject to GCCC approval. See you there along with another 1000 others hopefully!!

GUEST SPEAKER:

Janette is a former educator who experienced members of her immediate family who needed care in their later years and struggled to find carers who she felt respected the dignity of the people in their care. She observed that there is a lack of training and carers seem to patronise or talk down to people in their care which she found offensive and of course is horrible for the people in their care.

She believes that all people requiring assisted care are looking for safety, comfort, dignity and to be heard irrespective of their capacity at the time.

She said the common themes with elderly people is that they fear moving to managed care facilities, fear losing independence, want to be respected (dignity), suffer from loss of sleep and suffer anxiety and uncertainty – “is my life over?”. Editor’s note: I am sure a lot of us have experienced this and I think she is spot on.

Her experiences led he to establish Dignified Services. The carers she hires are heavily vetted and using her experience as an educator she ensures all her carers are trained in what is required of them as a carer both physically and more importantly emotionally in maintaining the values she has established in the company to provide the right experience for people in their care with respect and dignity.

Services are provided at people’s residences and cover all aspects of what people need depending on their capacity.

He ambition is to establish a Hospice with the same values.

She left us with the thought that everybody of whatever age and capacity deserves respect, no life is without value and purpose and authentic connection between carer and cared is essential.

MEMBERS CONTACT LIST:

An editorial decision has been taken to drop this list from the Bulletin for the following reasons:

  • An informal survey of a few members led to the conclusion that no one refers to it
  • We all have mobile phones and most of us have the other members numbers in our contact lists.
  • There should be only one register of members and that is Club Runner. Duplicating the information in the Bulletin is time consuming and error prone.
  • If you need an email and don’t have it, just look at the distribution list for the Bulletin by clicking on the full list of recipients and you can pick up any email you like.
Happy days for Hansard!!
