Another Successful Chinese New Year Dinner

An excellent social event at Wednesday's Chinese New Year dinner, held at Benowa Highlands Restaurant. Great food, great atmosphere, great fellowship!  Thank you Jenny Dees for organising the night and sourcing such novel raffle prizes with the theme of the Year of the Rat!  We had 30 people there, all of whom enjoyed an outstanding Lion Dance by Mantis Kung Fu.
All who paid the Lions will have exceptional good luck this year!

District Conference coming up fast

This year's event is going to be a real country affair, being held at Tenterfield on 29 to 31 March 2020!
Go to the Conference Website and check out what's happening.  There you find the program, a brief summary of all the Keynote Speakers, and of course you can register.  But of course, one of the big attractions of attending a conference is always the deep feeling of Rotary Fellowship. Being in the country, formalities will be kept to a minimum. You have an opportunity to meet, eat and drink with other Rotarians and their partners from other places in the District, you'll meet overseas people, Exchange Students.
Here is just one of the speakers you wouldn't want to miss:  Bernie Shakeshaft.  Bernie didn’t quite fit in as a kid. He struggled with his schoolwork and was often caned by his teachers. As an adult, Bernie went to the Northern Territory to become a jackaroo. While working on vast cattle properties, he picked up skills as a tracker from some of his Aboriginal co-workers.
Later, Bernie got into youth work, and today he runs a youth service in Armidale, Northern NSW. At BackTrack Youthworks Bernie welcomes kids who are a bit like his former self. He meets teenagers falling into a life of petty crime, and sometimes incarceration. As soon as they show up, they’re given full responsibility for a working dog....

February is Peace & Conflict Prevention Month

This year, District 9640 had two applications for endorsement for Rotary Peace Fellow Scholarships: 1 from Pakistan; 1 from Nigeria. There were no local applicants. One application, from a Pakistani lady, was endorsed by the District Governor and was forwarded to Rotary International. She had also applied two years ago, when she was granted an ‘alternative’ position (read: put on a waiting list) and ultimately she would have been successful. Regrettably, she was unable to take it up since she had just given birth to her daughter.
Do you know someone that may qualify for a Rotary Peace Fellowship Scholarship? These scholarships are a valuable learning activity for a young adult up to study in overseas universities in that very subject. Basically, all expenses are paid for. Click on this link: Rotary World Peace Fellowships, or contact me if you know of a potential prospect.

Show Up for your Health and Wellbeing

Joan McEwan is a Leadership, Health and Wellbeing Coach and was an inspiring speaker at today's Rotary breakfast. Joan told us about her life from Scotland to Australia, and talked about Mental and Physical Health and how to "Show UP" and take personal responsibility around our Health and Wellbeing.

The 3 key takeaways were: -
1. Nurture yourself - self care is critical to personal and professional development. Take time to connect your body, mind and spirit. Take yourself out of your comfort zone and be vulnerable - that is when the growth happens
2. Nutrition - eat nutritionally rich food, clean food and filtered water. This will help strengthen and detoxify your body. Raising the body vibration and amplifying your energy
3. Capacity - Manage your professional and professional workload. Check in and see if your workload aligns with your vision, purpose and values! Clear out what is no longer working or useful and make space for the "New". Develop a "growth focus"

Joan's message to us all was: What changes are you ready to make to "Show UP" on your Health and Wellbeing Journey?

Thank you Joan!

RI President Elect Holger Knaack's Theme  20-21

RI President Elect Holger Knaack released his Presidential Theme for 2020-21, Rotary Opens Opportunities. Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, revealed the theme to incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 20 January.
"Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather “an invitation to endless opportunities,” said Knaack, who becomes President on 1 July 2020. He emphasized that Rotary creates pathways for members to improve their lives and the lives of those they help through service projects. “We believe that our acts of service, big and small, create opportunities for people who need our help,” Knaack said. He added that Rotary creates leadership opportunities and gives members the chance to travel the world to put their service ideas into action and make lifelong connections. “Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere,” he said.

The Interactors are also looking for donated books & toys for their collection box which goes to a local children’s charity.
Each of the Interactors sat with our Club members during our meeting and were able to ask about how a Rotary Club operates.
